Understanding peroneal tendons
The peroneal tendons stabilize the outer ankle and help control the foot during walking and sport. They may become inflamed, torn, or unstable after an ankle injury or from repetitive loading.
Common signs and symptoms
- Pain behind the outer ankle bone
- Swelling along the tendon
- Snapping or popping
- Weakness on uneven ground
What to expect during evaluation
The examination assesses tendon strength, stability, foot shape, and ankle ligaments. Ultrasound or MRI may define tearing or tendon subluxation.
Treatment options
Treatment depends on the diagnosis, severity, activity goals, overall health, and prior care. Options may include:
- Activity modification
- Brace or walking boot
- Physical therapy
- Orthotic support
- Tendon repair or stabilization when indicated
