Understanding ankle sprains

An ankle sprain can involve stretched or torn ligaments and may occur with fractures, tendon injuries, or cartilage damage. Early evaluation helps determine the protection and rehabilitation needed.

Common signs and symptoms

  • Pain after twisting the ankle
  • Swelling or bruising
  • Difficulty bearing weight
  • Tenderness over the ligaments

What to expect during evaluation

The visit includes assessment of the injury mechanism, bone tenderness, ligament stability, tendon function, and walking ability. X-rays are obtained when fracture is a concern.

Treatment options

Treatment depends on the diagnosis, severity, activity goals, overall health, and prior care. Options may include:

  • Protection with a brace or boot
  • Swelling control
  • Early guided motion
  • Physical therapy
  • Surgery only for selected persistent instability or associated injuries
When to seek prompt care: Seek prompt care for severe pain, deformity, an open wound, rapidly increasing swelling, spreading redness, loss of sensation, or a cool or discolored foot.
