Understanding ankle fractures
Ankle fractures range from stable injuries that can heal in a boot to displaced or unstable patterns that require reduction and fixation to restore alignment.
Common signs and symptoms
- Pain after a twist or fall
- Rapid swelling and bruising
- Difficulty bearing weight
- Visible deformity in severe injuries
What to expect during evaluation
Examination includes skin condition, circulation, sensation, tenderness, and alignment. X-rays define the fracture, while CT may help with complex joint patterns.
Treatment options
Treatment depends on the diagnosis, severity, activity goals, overall health, and prior care. Options may include:
- Splinting and swelling control
- Protected weight-bearing
- Casting or boot treatment for stable fractures
- Reduction of displaced fractures
- Surgical fixation for unstable patterns
