Understanding talar cartilage injury
An osteochondral lesion affects cartilage and bone on the talus, often after an ankle sprain. Symptoms may persist even after the ligament injury appears to have healed.
Common signs and symptoms
- Deep ankle pain
- Swelling after activity
- Catching or locking
- Persistent pain after a sprain
What to expect during evaluation
Weight-bearing X-rays are the starting point, while MRI or CT may define lesion size, stability, cyst formation, and surrounding cartilage.
Treatment options
Treatment depends on the diagnosis, severity, activity goals, overall health, and prior care. Options may include:
- Activity modification
- Temporary immobilization
- Physical therapy
- Arthroscopic cartilage procedures
- Restorative or grafting procedures for selected lesions
