Understanding foot ulcers
Foot ulcers may result from diabetes, neuropathy, pressure, deformity, trauma, or poor circulation. An ulcer may be serious even when it is not painful. Healing requires treating the wound, reducing pressure, and addressing the reason it developed.
Common signs and symptoms
- An open sore
- Drainage or odor
- Redness or swelling
- Callus surrounding a wound
What to expect during evaluation
The wound is assessed for depth, infection, pressure, circulation, sensation, and exposed structures. Imaging, cultures, laboratory testing, or vascular evaluation may be needed.
Treatment options
Treatment depends on the diagnosis, severity, activity goals, overall health, and prior care. Options may include:
- Debridement when indicated
- Dressings and moisture management
- Offloading
- Infection treatment
- Vascular or surgical coordination
