Understanding charcot foot
Charcot neuroarthropathy can cause bones and joints to fracture and collapse in a foot with reduced sensation. Early recognition and offloading are essential.
Common signs and symptoms
- A warm, swollen foot
- Redness with little pain
- Change in foot shape
- New pressure points or wounds
What to expect during evaluation
Evaluation includes temperature, skin integrity, sensation, circulation, alignment, and weight-bearing imaging. MRI or CT may help determine activity and reconstruction planning.
Treatment options
Treatment depends on the diagnosis, severity, activity goals, overall health, and prior care. Options may include:
- Immediate immobilization and offloading
- Close serial monitoring
- Custom bracing or footwear
- Wound and vascular coordination
- Reconstruction for unstable or unbraceable deformity
