Understanding flatfoot
Flatfoot describes a lowered arch. A painless, stable flatfoot may not require treatment, while a painful or progressively collapsing foot should be evaluated. Treatment depends on flexibility, tendon function, age, alignment, and whether arthritis is present.
Common signs and symptoms
- Arch or inner ankle pain
- Foot fatigue
- Progressive flattening
- Difficulty with prolonged walking
What to expect during evaluation
Standing alignment, gait, flexibility, tendon strength, and weight-bearing X-rays help define the type and severity of flatfoot.
Treatment options
Treatment depends on the diagnosis, severity, activity goals, overall health, and prior care. Options may include:
- Supportive footwear
- Custom orthotics
- Bracing
- Physical therapy
- Joint-preserving reconstruction or fusion when indicated
