Understanding cysts & soft-tissue masses

Most foot and ankle masses are benign, but a new, painful, enlarging, or unexplained lump deserves evaluation before treatment.

Common signs and symptoms

  • A visible or palpable lump
  • Shoe irritation
  • Pain with pressure
  • Change in size

What to expect during evaluation

Evaluation considers location, consistency, mobility, skin changes, and growth. Ultrasound, X-ray, MRI, or biopsy may be recommended.

Treatment options

Treatment depends on the diagnosis, severity, activity goals, overall health, and prior care. Options may include:

  • Observation for stable benign lesions
  • Padding or footwear modification
  • Aspiration for selected cysts
  • Advanced imaging or biopsy
  • Surgical removal when indicated
When to seek prompt care: Prompt evaluation is recommended for a rapidly growing mass, skin breakdown, unexplained night pain, or neurologic symptoms.
