Understanding big toe arthritis
Hallux rigidus is arthritis of the big-toe joint. Loss of motion can make walking, running, and certain shoes painful as the toe bends during push-off.
Common signs and symptoms
- Pain at the big-toe joint
- Stiffness or reduced motion
- A bump on top of the joint
- Pain with push-off
What to expect during evaluation
The examination assesses joint motion, tenderness, alignment, and gait. Weight-bearing X-rays show bone spurs and the extent of cartilage loss.
Treatment options
Treatment depends on the diagnosis, severity, activity goals, overall health, and prior care. Options may include:
- Stiff-soled or rocker-bottom footwear
- Activity modification
- Medication or injection
- Cheilectomy for selected earlier disease
- Joint fusion or replacement procedures for advanced disease
